Welcome Home Zsa Zsa!

I have been meaning to write this post for a while, but I have been terribly busy lately, due to a new member of our family.  I had been searching high and low for a female chihuahua  puppy.  I really wanted a little girl and already had a name picked out for her.  I needed a puppy that wasn't too big, because I wanted to make sure that Dexter would be comfortable with her.  And most important she couldn't be ugly, which most chihuahuas are by nature, but I can't stand a dog with crazy bug eyes... So when I finally found her and when I saw her I knew she would be a perfect fit for our family.
Isn't she cute?

Then about two and a half weeks after I brought her home she got really sick.  I didn't think she would make it through the night and I rushed her to the vet as soon as I could.  Sad to say after a hefty bill and a thorough exam, they still don't know what had made her sick.  After some medicine and all of us waiting on her paw and foot, she was back to her normal self.

Last week we had to make another emergency trip to the vet when Zsa Zsa decided to channel her inner Evel Knievel and take a flying leap off the top of the couch.  Not very high or far for a big dog, but for a 5 pound chihuahua it was a really poor decision.  Needless to say she didn't "stick" her landing and broke her leg in two places.  She had to have surgery and is now sporting a green cast.

Ouch!

And as for Dexter, he mostly tried to spend the first three weeks ignoring her. Until she broke her leg, he showed concern briefly and now I can gladly say that he tolerates her!

This is the look that Deter usually gives Zsa Zsa... and everyone else...

Welcome to the family Zsa Zsa!

Saying Goodbye To An Old Friend

A week ago we lost our dog Bodie.   I was devastated, being that I am the one who spent the most time with him. He was between 14-15 years old, so we knew it was coming, we just didn't like to think about it.  Even though it was to be expected it seemed so sudden because I went out to check on him and he was fine, I leave and come back 3 hours later and he was struggling to take a breath.  There was nothing else we could do for him except give him a peaceful passing.
Our Bodie was an unusual dog, not very bright but very sweet, he was great with the kids, not just our kids, but all kids. He liked to be brushed although this was a full time job because as he got older he shed non stop.  He loved cheese and when I made him pork chops (yes I did cook for my dogs, don't judge me.) He loved hugs, playing with our chihuahua Dexter and to shake hands (which was the only trick he knew, but he was damn proud of himself for it!)
I will always remember the time he broke through the metal doors of our shed on the Fourth of July because people the next street over set off fireworks, or the time he ran straight into our sliding glass door and knocked out a tooth.  He ran away every time there was a thunder shower, even when he couldn't hear and he was beginning to lose his sight.  Despite all of the things he had destroyed and all of the money we spent bailing him out of the pound, he was still a good dog.  He loved the kids, he loved people and he loved other dogs. He was a giant teddy bear.  Some of my favorite times I spent with him was when we would sit on the patio together and watch the sunrise.  He would lay his big furry head in my lap and just sit there, like he enjoyed the sunrise too.  Good bye old friend, I miss you and will love you forever.

Doggy Coats - Martha Stewart Pets

Doggy Coats - Martha Stewart Pets

It has been FREEZING in my area of Southern Cali lately. Really, it's been so cold that it physically hurts to go outside.  I feel really horrible every time I have to let my poor little Chihuahua Dexter out to go potty in 10 degree weather.  He has clothes but nothing that keeps him super warm so I usually end up layering, a tee shirt, a sweater and a coat, but he still looks so cold. I have the hardest time trying to find x-small dog clothes in my area.
Dexter loves to play outside and has been just sitting by the window looking out longingly at the backyard.  This would be a great project for a rainy day, and maybe I can even salvage so extra material to making him some matching doggy boots.
